Dear Mr Brown

Posted by Ross Smith on June 27, 2007 6:55 AM |

If it doesn't steal Gordon Brown's thunder too much, I'll start the North East Chamber of Commerce's new blog on the day he becomes Prime Minister.

It's an appropriate time to start, as we've today sent him an open letter on behalf of our 4,500 members, which sets out our ambitions for this region, and how we believe his Government can support us in achieving them.

Anyone who has followed NECC's lobbying over recent times will not be surprised to see that transport upgrades and skills appear near the top of our priorities. We've also asked Mr Brown to investigate ways to prevent interest rate rises having an adverse impact on investment, and how the planning system can do more to support development.

In the short term, Mr Brown faces some tough decisions on the future of the regional spatial strategy and re-structuring of local government in Northumberland and County Durham.

Although we no longer have a PM from our region, we see no reason why the region's case to Downing Street should carry any less weight. The UK economy needs a successful North East - otherwise it will fail to reach its full potential.

We've made impressive strides in this region in recent years. We're looking forward to hearing how Mr Brown will support our ambitions to go even further and faster in the years to come.

GREATER REGIONAL ACCOUNTABILITY AND GOVERNANCE
Great news that PM Brown may scrap the unelected Regional Assembly. Great news that the fat, inefficient regional development agency One NorthEast may be streamlined. Great news that the region is to have its own minister who will fight for the interests of the patch. This is all promising progress - greater accountability and scrutiny of tax payers money is long overdue. The region's quangos are a scary political and economic force with nobody really having much influence. Lets hope Brown's good intentions turn into real action and delivers progress for the region.

What a wonderful of optimism, welcoming the new primeminister yet only a year or so ahead we are on the edge of a very severe depression.

So much for Labour, so much for the heralded plans of the North, next time before being so positive wait a little while as bad management and bad fiscal poliicies and bad Governance will reveal itself in a very short space of time.

I await your next post which will no doubt be equally welcoming when the next conservative Government takes office.

A big welcome then well, nothing simply because if its one thing our politicians do give two hoots about its the North East.

The only thing I want to know is why are dumb enough still to elect these pariahs into office, you would be better off electing a donkey, ass and a chipmunk. Oops sorry we already have......
