The recent events surrounding Northern Rock, coupled with the news the ã500m Energy Technologies Institute wonâÂÂt be coming to the North East, you might expect am air of âÂÂdoom and gloomâ to hang over the regionâÂÂs economy.
So hereâÂÂs the reasons why we should not lose the optimism and ambition that have characterised the region in recent years:
1. Our response to the situation at Northern Rock, prompted by NECCâÂÂs call for the business community to unite behind a company which has done so much good for the region;
2. Expansion at Teesport moved closer this week as a deal was struck which should pave the way for PD Portsâ Northern Gateway project;
3. Emiratesâ new flights to Dubai from Newcastle have hugely strengthened the regionâÂÂs position as an international business location;
4. AmecâÂÂs new design and engineering centre in Wynyard will create 150 jobs â ncluding scores of high quality graduate positions;
5. Company of the year WellstreamâÂÂs shares hit an all-time high this summer after successfully opening a factory in Brazil;
6. Tanfield aims to treble production at its Washington plant next year;
7. Eaga has broken into the FTSE 250 just three months after flotation;
8. Newcastle Building Society has just announced plans for a new centre in North Tyneside which will recruit 500 staff.
ThereâÂÂs plenty more where those came from â and a stack of new success stories about to be revealed when the Fastest 50 is published next month. The North East remains a fantastic place to do business â and the best is yet to come.
