It’s an exciting place, the North-East of England. People come here to work, to live, and of course to dress up as Barbie-dolls and parade themselves around the pubs and clubs.
But what is the real pull of the area for so many people?
I approach this subject as someone who has only recently arrived in the North-East, and is generally fascinated by place.
Accents, colloquialisms, manners and values change enormously as you move around this small country.
It’s been a reasonably long trip for me, from Essex to Newcastle via Leicester, Reading and Leeds over the last 10 or so years, but I feel instantly at ease here and already consider the region ‘home’.
It might be the fact that my wife is a local and we have lots of family and friends here already. However, similar is true of some of the other places I’ve lived, and they’ve certainly been nearer my roots!
I’ll be talking about some of the ‘push-pull’ factors that influence people’s decisions to enter or leave the area over the next few weeks.
There is a professional purpose to my contributions also, with a major survey about to be launched investigating these factors. I will be reporting on the findings of this survey as the data builds.
Whether you are a native North Easterner living here or elsewhere, a recent arrival, or a visitor to the region, I’d love to hear your thoughts on what makes it such a special place. As such, please feel free to share your views and stories...
