Two sets of statistics last week made very encouraging reading for the North East economy.
Firstly, employment statistics showed the region has more people in work than ever before, with the employment rate growing faster than anywhere else in the country.
Secondly, business registration statistics showed the region has more businesses than ever before, with the largest increase of any region in the UK.
It seems superfluous to add much comment to those statistics, which largely speak for themselves. However, we want them to go higher and quicker - and the North East Chamber of Commerce will keep pushing for the changes that will help that happen. The region is catching the UK average rate on these measures, but it's not there yet - which means there must be untapped potential waiting to be unleashed.
It may be true that on these measures we've never have had it so good. But, if I can get away with two cliches in the same paragraph, we still believe the best is yet to come.
