The innovators deserve the rewards. I was at the launch of the Society of Wildlife artists at the unusually named fi.fie.fo.fum in the Tyne Valley in Northumberland. These artists rarely display outside of London and the region is lucky to have this display on until 30th March. The wider point from the night is about innovation in farming....why are some farming families better at it?
John Moffitt CBE has led an impressive life and as such was glad to buy his autobiography it also serves as a reminder about how farming - particularly dairy farming has changed radically. I milked cows for a year as a student and in a quirk of fate failed to get a job working for the Moffitts at Peepy as a student in 1983!
We need more innovation in the countryside and we need to see our landscape, people and even its animals in the most diverse and creative light.
At the present time a small number of rural businesses seem to take the risks and opportunities which takes me to highlight two of the week. The First ever Doug Richards show - Dragons Den fame - was on all day in Newcastle and made me consider the differences between scaleable business and lifestyle/niche businesses.
Know what you do, do it well and understand if you are a scaleable or niche operation.
