It would seem that each week there is a new offering of a tape free online back solution offering to help you sleep safe in the knowledge that your data is available and secure. I would like to warn the North East Business community of some potential pitfalls to watch out for.
You initial backup is likely to be very large and although subsequent backups will be much smaller there is a good chance that it will have an impact on your internet connection if you subscribe to a contract with a fair usage policy.
You must put it in your diary to test this back up at least once per week by recovering a random file or database.
Will it back up databases and open files, individual mailboxes & SharePoint?
If your server is stolen how long would it take to get a new server and put the data back on?
If you need a full system mirror I would suggest you use a local company to take a snapshot of your entire system using a product such as VM Ware and then in the event of disaster they would simply bring the USB/Firewire device to site and get you up and running. Would this be possible from a datacenter in London!
