Before I set off on my journey to Rwanda on Sunday, I am working against the clock to get everything in place for my trip. It has been a varied couple of weeks including everything from booking hotels for the interview process to preparing a recruitment ad for Rwandan TV!
The reason I am travelling out to Rwanda is to prepare for our Big Lottery Fund supported training project that kicks off next year. I am working out there in advance of this to basically find the right people for the training posts available and also to meet some of the fair trade businesses we will be supporting.
Over the past few days, I have shortlisted six Rwandan applicants from the 56 that applied and I’m now preparing questions as well as ensuring that the venue we have chosen for interviews and our Open Day has everything it needs.
I’ve booked the Impala Hotel, because it’s cheap, central, the staff are friendly and it overlooks some of the country’s beautiful Mille Collines (which translates to ‘thousand hills’.) I’ve been in touch a lot on Skype with the manager, which I know from past experience is vital so that things run as smoothly as possible.
Saying that, from the past nine overseas trips I have undertaken on behalf of the Shared Interest Foundation, no matter how much you prepare, a few surprises will still come your way! I look forward to sharing these with Journal readers during the ten days of my trip and will be in touch beforehand with a few more instalments as the countdown begins, including those all important immunisation jabs and how to prepare for a long haul flight that involves three plane transfers and six hour stay in Nairobi airport!
