Growth figures demonstrate the country is not back in recession

The doom-mongers' predictions have been dispelled with the growth figures demonstrating that the country is not back in recession.
The announcement that the economy is growing is excellent news. A 0.5 percent increase will help instil confidence in to industry in the UK.
It is all too easy for the country to talk itself into a recession. That is why it is important that business and commerce should take heart from the positive data.
The latest statistics demonstrate that markets are responding to the measures being put in place to get the country back on economic track.
However, we cannot be complacent. There is no doubt that hard work, vision and the ability to look for new opportunities and develop new products, processes and services will be needed to maintain the current economic momentum.
But I hope that the heartening news about the UK's Gross Domestic Product from the Office of National Statistics encourages businesses to consider expansion and recruitment.

Business is back!

It seems like only a few weeks ago since I last blogged. In fact I have been in ths new role for five months - so it is high time I said something interesting online!
I'll keep it short, but look out for the redesigned Business section in the Gazette tomorrow. We've rethought most parts of it, from the content and sectors to colours and fonts. But, as ever, it is the readers who are the most important element and I want to make sure I let as many of them as possible know what I am doing to their newspaper.
At the same time we will be starting this series of blogs from our leading business writers and we will restart a morning email out to selected readers letting them know what we are covering that day.
We're backing businesses - and we know businesses will back us!

Our drive to create new apprenticeships in the region has been a phenomenal success.
The 500 Apprentices in 100 Days initiative saw a final tally of 1,355 new opportunities - an incredible achievement and testament to the hard work of businesses and training providers across the region.
The Evening Gazette and The Journal have championed the campaign since it launched in January.
Run in association with the National Apprenticeship Service and supported by the North East Chamber of Commerce, the final total is an almost 14-fold increase on the original target.
Smashed within weeks of us starting out, we quickly raised the bar from 100 to 500 apprentices.
The final figure turned out to be so much more.
We'll be celebrating the campaign's success later this week with a special 500 in 100 supplement on Thursday, May 19.
Let's hope this campaign will also leave a lasting legacy for the North-east - showing that apprenticeships are great news for both employees and employers.
