How can we better communicate about climate change?

Who would you trust to provide accurate information about climate change?
A scientist? A politician? The media? A businessman? Your children?
The Royal Meterological (RMetS) produced an interesting video-recorded survey in 2008 www.rmets.org/video/talking-heads/science-festival.html asking Liverpudlians this question, and many respondents said that they would trust scientists, but often-times the context in which scientists present information about climate change is difficult to digest. Or if the media reports on the release of new scientific evidence related to climate change, e.g. rate of glaciers melting and implications for sea level rise, the impact is not always put into the bigger picture of global climate, and hence it can sometimes be tricky for those without an inherent interest in climate change to make the connections between what may seem to be a distant issue, but one that actually has implications for us all.

Flooding is a large and ever-increasing problem, with 19,167 properties at risk in the North East of England alone. (Figure from: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Nl1/Newsroom/DG_178773).
But...If we take precautionary measures, then we can minimise the risks to ourselves and to our communities. As your Granny always told you, FOREWARNED IS FOREARMED!
In order to achieve community resilience, we need to be able to raise awareness of flood risk and motivate our community, including local businesses, to take action.
A great way to do this is through our schools. Schools are at the heart of our communities and are therefore well-placed to deliver meaningful and co-ordinated community engagement, drawing in support from a range of professional partners to tackle locally pertinent issues.

2011 has marked an exciting and successful time for ClimateNE; we kick-started a number of services that aim to help and support businesses identify if they are at risk to climate change, build resilience, save money, and identify commercial opportunities.

Forward-thinking businesses must not only consider how to reduce their environmental impact, but also how to adapt and build resilience to the expected impacts of climate change as part of their wider business model.
The former is known as mitigation and the latter as adaptation. And clarification on this is very often sought. So, what is the difference between adaptation and mitigation?

Bringing North East businesses together in a way that works

I have already blogged about ConnectFriday, a new way to bring North East businesses together to build relations and collaborate on the green, climate resilient and low-carbon agenda, and I'm really excited that we're going ahead with a second event in the New Year.
The first event, which we hosted in November, was met with fantastic feedback and a request that ConnectFriday events take place every other month.

• Young people in Brazil use mobile phones and digital technology to help map areas of risk, which in turn, feed into community-level emergency response strategies, such as dealing with the effects of flooding and landslides.
• The creation of cyclone-proof schools in Madagascar with water supplies that provide access to clean, safe drinking water in times of extreme weather events.
These two examples are just some of the ways that businesses are working with UNICEF on the 'Climate Positive for Children' project, whereby companies are helping their future employees, customers and stakeholders become more resilient to a changing climate, particularly in parts of the world being hardest hit by climate change.
More locally, did you know that in the North East of England, schools and young people have been leading on collaborative, community-wide climate change adaptation projects since 2009?

I've had the privilege of working on an initiative called the Boardroom v Classroom Challenge this year.
Working with Krista and Harriet, from the Climate Change Schools Project, we hooked up three businesses with students to get them to look at ways to develop commercially viable ideas relating to the low-carbon and climate resilient economy.

Connecting like-minded businesses

Chatting informally face-to-face with like-minded people is probably one of the most effective ways that you can share information, build relations, collaborate and do business together.
We held the very first ConnectFriday this morning with this in mind. It was a free and informal gathering for like-minded businesses to meet and see how they can share information and intelligence on the green, climate resilient and low-carbon agenda.
Nearly 30 people came along to the event, which we held at the Settle Down café in Newcastle; the feedback was overwhelmingly positive - there is an obvious need for regular informal networking-style meetings for like-minded businesses to collaborate and share information.

Undoubtedly a low-carbon economy packs an attractive business punch: jobs, commercial opportunities, training, and plenty of ways to save money.
Indeed, research from the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills estimates that the UK market value of the low carbon and environmental goods and services sector is valued at £112 billion with almost 910,000 jobs.
