No quick fix for North East manufacturing

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) released figures this week showing the UK manufacturing sector shrank by 0.7pc in October. Manufacturing output was also revised down for September to just 0.1pc growth from a previous estimate of 0.2pc.

Light at the end of a long tunnel

When leading economist Roger Bootle came to the North East last week to deliver his verdict on the state of the economy, there weren't many people in the room who expected good news.

His speech came on the day that the ONS announced the latest jobs figures showing that UK unemployment rose by 80,000 in the three months to July this year. The figures also showed that in the North East 136,000 people are now out of work, or 10.7 per cent of the population aged 16 or over.

Television should embrace, rather than fear, social networks

Social networking complements, rather than threatens, the television industry, according to a new report from Deloitte. Half of the respondents to a Deloitte/Gfk survey regularly watch television while surfing the web and, of this group, 54 per cent visit social networking sites. Online shopping (45 per cent) and social communication (emailing, instant messaging and Skype) (40 per cent) are the next most popular websites to visit at the same time as watching television.

Higher education must adapt to avoid 'perfect storm'

As North East students eargerly await exam results to secure a place in higher education,the institutions themseves are also feeling the pressure. Budgets are squeezed, staff and students are becoming harder to attract and competition is fierce.

The economic environment, increased competition, outdated practices and new regulation are all combining to create the perfect storm for higher education institutions in the region.

A recent report shows that the focus for universities should be on modernising their way of working, getting the most out of their assets and updating their internal procedures to respond effectively to change. This will help attract the best staff and students and meet the needs of their various constituencies.

Moving beyond the status quo will not be easy but universities need to look internally and externally to identify best practice and aggressively implement new approaches.
