Trade online from home with the YouTrade competition
Posted by Norma Foster on February 14, 2008 4:21 PM
The internet can provide a means for virtually anyone to start a business, and work at home with limited investment. This is exactly the idea behind ‘YouTrade. Online. At Home’.
The competition is aimed at helping people in the region make changes to their lives. Entries are encouraged from anyone over the age of 18 who are employed, and wanting to test out the potential of self-employment, and those who are not currently in employment.
It will reward 25 winners with a cash prize of up to £2,000 to set up a business from home and trade online, initially through eBay.

Virtually risking it all

Often stare out of your window and dream of setting up your own online business? You're not alone, but the risks involved in ditching the day job are scary enough to put off many would-be entrepreneurs.
If you're weighing up the benefits of being your own boss with the fear of risking your home on a punt, I bet you'd be interested in a site where you can try a business out for size without losing a 'real' penny.
Why not try Second Life? It started as a game and has evolved into a thriving 3D virtual world with its own currency and business community.

The race is on!

The race to be named the region’s top digital talent is on – entries are rolling in thick and fast for the very first North East Digital Awards.
A Middlesbrough fitness equipment retailer, a collaboration of artists and craftspeople in Northumberland, and an x-ray surgeon reviewing medical devices are among those who’ve posted entries at www.northeastdigitalawards.co.uk so far.
With less than 80 days left isn't it time you get your entry in?

Simply Brilliant!

We’re working hard to encourage entrepreneurship in the North East of England, and the YouTrade initiative is doing just that; it has helped 10 people set up business using eBay.
One YouTrader, Dunston-based Melanie Dixon, has seized this opportunity with both hands - only three months after launching her business ‘Colourwithme’ which sells pre-designed cartoon birthday cards for kids to colour, Melanie says she is already looking at expanding her range.
When we launched YouTrade, we wanted to inspire people to be enterprising and to turn their ideas into something real and I am delighted that Mel’s venture has taken off so quickly. She is proving to be an inspiration and an example to us all of how a great idea coupled with creativity and enterprising spirit can become something big. She is a fantastic example to all budding entrepreneurs of the virtues of thinking outside the box, and having the vision and drive to take one simple yet very clever idea and run with it.
We want to encourage and support entrepreneurship in the region and the YouTrade competition has been a fantastic opportunity for 10 entrepreneurs to develop a business idea online.

And the winner is…

Take it from me; the North East is blessed with numerous examples of businesses who have successfully adopted new digital technologies. Far from being flippant, I find such stories both hugely satisfying and equally inspirational. In recognition of these achievements, we at The North East Regional Portal (TNERP) have developed The North East Digital Awards.
Funded by regional development agency One NorthEast, the awards will celebrate the success of businesses within the digital arena, whether small or large scale. The North East Digital Awards website www.northeastdigitalawards.co.uk will be the basis for an interactive digital community, where visitors can show their support for registered businesses and vote for them in a variety of award categories.

Success for Durham entrepreneur

A little help and a lot of hard work can go a long way towards success, as Kate Dawson has proved.
She is one of 10 entrepreneurs from across the region who each won £2,000 to start their own business via eBay through YouTrade – a competition to encourage online entrepreneurship across the North East.
Just six months after launching her jewellery business Spirit Unique, Kate opened The Spirit Gallery and Giftshop in Eshottheugh, which is near Felton in Northumberland.

Digital women show off their stuff

Last week we held a showcase event for the Digital Women’s Network (DWN) – a member-led organisation for women who work and play in the digital industry. It was a great evening, and a real eye-opener; the women are a passionate and talented bunch who really put their heart and soul into their work.
Among the impressive presenters was Lyn Hagan who is ambitiously aiming to put art on Mars – what is fascinating about this is Lyn’s sheer determination to make this unlikely event happen, and she’s on schedule for take off in 2013.
Ellie Lands, a talented animator who has just received a fellowship with Digital City, wowed the crowd with an animation about the Berlin Wall and the perceived way of life for either side.
Vi Chong is another inspirational female using digital technology to make something special. She’s a VJ – a video jockey – so instead of mixing music she mixes video footage, to stunning effect. And it’s not pre-meditated at all; everything is mixed live in front of your eyes.

Is cyberslacking damaging your business?

Where would we be without the internet? It has changed the way we do business, buy houses, find friends, find jobs, book holidays, have a laugh...
In fact, the internet touches nearly everything we do. And it’s fabulous! Imagine life without the likes of Google, BBC Online and YouTube.
But we need to know where to draw the line.
The news last week that three workers at Neath Port Talbot Council lost their jobs because of excessive use of the internet while at work isn’t the first.
